07/09/2010 - Detroit, MI (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Magglio Ordonez had three hits and drove in three runs in Detroit's 7-3 victory in the opener of a crucial three-game intradivision set.
Carlos Guillen had two hits and drove in two runs, and Miguel Cabrera singled to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 17 games for Detroit, which maintained its' hold on the top spot in the AL Central.
Justin Verlander (11-5) made it through 5 1/3 innings to grab the win after being charged with a pair of runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out seven for the Tigers, who have won four straight and six out seven.
Francisco Liriano (6-7) was banged up to the tune of seven runs on six hits, two walks and two hit batters over just 1 2/3 innings, while recording only one strikeout in his shortest outing of the year as the Twins fell for a third consecutive game and for a fifth time in six tries.
Ordonez and Brennan Boesch singled home runs in the first inning to give the Tigers the early 2-0 lead.
The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the second with a walk, bunt base hit and hit batter. Ordonez then lined a single into centerfield to deliver two runs and make it a 4-0 game. Cabrera fouled out to right field on a running catch by Jason Kubel in front of the stands that allowed Ryan Raburn to score and extend the lead to five. Guillen followed with a triple to left- center field to chase home two more runs and knock Liriano out of the game.
Alex Burnett came on to retire Brandon Inge for the final out of the frame and wound up tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Minnesota reached Verlander for a run in the fourth when Orlando Hudson led off with a single, moved up on a walk to Joe Mauer and scored on a one-out base hit by Kubel. Mauer advanced to third on an error by Austin Jackson in center but was stranded when Michael Cuddyer struck out and Delmon Young flied out.
Mauer singled with one out in the sixth, moved to second base on a Jim Thome base hit and scored when Kubel lined a single to left. Cuddyer then singled to load the bases and chase Verlander from the hill.
Robbie Weinhardt came on to squash the rally by getting Young to ground into an inning-ending double play. The young right-hander worked a scoreless seventh and was followed by Phil Coke, who tossed a spotless eighth inning.
Ryan Perry took over in the ninth and allowed a leadoff double to Cuddyer and a base hit to Young and was quickly replaced by Jose Valverde.
Young stole second base before J.J. Hardy singled to left to trim the lead to 7-3 and put runners at the corners. Hardy moved to second on a passed ball but the All-Star right-hander squelched any further thought of a comeback by setting down the next three hitters to end the game.

Will Ohio State continue to run the table in College Football betting odds?
MySportsbook.com favors Buckeyes, Fighting Irish and Golden Bears in this weekend's big games.
NEW YORK, NY, Sept. 21 - My Sportsbook NCAA football fans: things are beginning to get really interesting on college football's national stage. Following last weekend's "Separation Saturday", which included five teams ranked in the top 15 dropping games, the BCS Championship picture is beginning to take shape - with Ohio State leading the charge. And, according to odds makers at MySportsbook.com, the number-one-ranked Buckeyes will continue their winning ways this weekend.
Revenge will be the name of the game in Columbus this Saturday, as Ohio State looks to even the score following last season's loss to Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Although Penn State are listed as 16.5 point underdogs, they are 11-10 all-time versus the Buckeyes. Paterno and the Lions, however, will have to shut down Heisman Trophy favorite Troy Smith who has thrown for 769 yards and seven touchdowns this season.
Speaking of revenge, Notre Dame will be out for some against Michigan State, following last year's 44 - 41 overtime loss to the Spartans in South Bend. The thirteenth-ranked Irish, listed as a 3-point favorite, will also be looking to avenge last Saturday's thrashing from the Michigan Wolverines. The Spartans, meanwhile, have won seven of the last nine match-ups against Notre Dame and are coming off an impressive 38-23 victory over Pittsburgh.
Out west, 22nd-ranked Arizona State will be battling for their first victory over 21st-ranked California since 2000. Although the Golden Bears are listed as 7.5-point favorites, the Sun Devils are 3-0, lead the nation in sacks with 18 and possess the Pac-10's leading passer in sophomore quarterback Rudy Carpenter.
