Khan leads by one in Germany

07/26/2007 - Hamburg, Germany (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Englishman Simon Khan opened with a seven- under-par 65 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead after one round of the Deutsche Bank Players Championship.

Khan's countrymen Lee Slattery and Oliver Wilson are one stroke back at minus- six. Alexander Noren, Carlos Rodiles, Zane Scotland, Taichi Teshima, Ricardo Gonzalez and Johan Axgren are another stroke further back at five-under-par 67.

Khan flew out of the gate with birdies on one and two, both from 20 feet out. He quickly jumped to four-under thanks to a 30-foot eagle putt on the par-five third. However, he gave a stroke back with a bogey at four.

The 35-year-old rolled in a birdie putt on the par-four eighth. He parred the next four around the turn.

Khan converted a birdie putt on the par-four 13th to move to five-under at Gut Kaden. He took advantage of the par-fives down the stretch with birdies on Nos. 15 and 17.

"I felt really good going out," said Khan, who did not qualify for last week's British Open. "I played in the last two (Opens) and felt I was better off doing some practice so I didn't watch a lot of it."

Khan returned to an old putter and changed his grip while he practiced at home last week.

"I went back to an old putter, changed my grip a little bit to how I used to putt as I did as a kid, with my finger down the shaft," Khan admitted. "I noticed (Padraig) Harrington does that although with the other hand. It felt really good last week and the first three holes today I holed three good putts."

Slattery also had a fast start with a birdie on one and an eagle at the third. He drained birdie efforts on eight and nine to turn in minus-five. Slattery capped a bogey-free round with a birdie on 17.

Wilson started on the back nine and posted four birdies over his first nine holes. He dropped a shot at one, then birdied three more holes on his way in to share second.

"I got off to a nice start by holing a few putts early on," Wilson said. "But I felt quite uncomfortable, to be honest, with my swing, but managed to keep putting well. I holed a few surprise putts towards the end, which was nice."

Niclas Fasth, the 2005 winner, carded a four-under-par 68 Thursday. He shares 10th place with Robert Rock, Andres Romero, David Frost, Stephen Gallacher, Marcus Higley, Charley Hoffman, Marc Warren, John Bickerton, Michael Campbell, Paul Casey and David Lynn.

Defending champion Robert Karlsson is part of a large group tied for 22nd at minus-three.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Bet NFL Sports Lines

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Betting Lines from sports betting lines have made Moreno a 5/2 favorite to win this year's Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. Fellow running back Chris “Beanie” Wells (Arizona Cardinals) is right behind Moreno at 7/2, while Donald Brown (Indianapolis Colts) and receiver Michael Crabtree (San Francisco 49ers) are 5/1 to win. Quarterbacks Mark Sanchez (New York Jets) and Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions) are 7/1 and 8/1, respectively.

A couple of players who present some value are Josh Freeman, Shonn Green and Darrius Heyward-Bey.

Freeman needs to beat out Byron Leftwich to become the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers but if he does, he has a lot or raw talent and could use the weapons around him (i.e. Kellen Winslow Jr. and Antonio Bryant) to be very successful in his first season.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.

And if you're looking for a deep sleeper, check out Pat White at 30/1. He enters the Miami Dolphins vaunted “Wild Cat” offense and could be a big time playmaker.
