DiPietro, Isles blank Blue Jackets

12/24/2006 - Uniondale, NY (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Rick DiPietro stopped 26 shots for his third shutout of the year, as the New York Islanders blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-0 at Nassau Coliseum.

Jason Blake, Trent Hunter, Mike Sillinger and Viktor Kozlov tallied, while Alexei Yashin and Radek Martinek recorded a pair of assists each for the Islanders, who have won three of their last four games.

Fredrik Norrena surrendered four goals on only 23 shots for the Blue Jackets, who have dropped four of six.

It was the first-ever win for the Islanders over the Blue Jackets, breaking an 0-6-1 streak since the Columbus joined the NHL in the 2000-2001 season.

Blake gave the Isles a 1-0 lead off a 3-on-1 rush at 2:02 of the first period, taking Yashin's dish from the right wing, faking Norrena, and pumping a wrister home from the slot. The marker was Blake's 20th of the season, the fourth straight year he has hit the 20-goal plateau.

Hunter doubled the lead at 6:33 of the second when he and Andy Hilbert worked down low on the left side to keep the puck deep in the Columbus zone. Hilbert slipped a defender at the goal line and dished to Hunter waiting in the high slot, and he chipped the pass over Norrena's left shoulder for his fifth of the season.

Sillinger's backhand shot off the rebound of Sean Hill's point drive on the power play 1:47 into the third boosted the Islanders to a 3-0 advantage, and Kozlov closed out the night with a wrister from the left circle that dribbled through Norrena's pads at the 9:01 mark.

Game Notes

New York is 6-0-0 in the second game of back-to-back contests this season...The Jackets fall to 8-6-1 under Ken Hitchcock...The Blue Jackets were shutout for the eighth time this season, and the second time in three games, while the Islanders have blanked their opponent three times this year, all by DiPietro.
